A historic Middlesbrough landmark takes centre stage next week as part of the town’s ever-popular Local History Month.

The Old Town Hall is a potent symbol of the town’s Victorian heyday which saw it flourish as a powerhouse of the industrial revolution.

A focal point of the St Hilda’s area which has fallen into disrepair in recent years, the building is to be given a new lease of life thanks to vital funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund.

Members of the public are invited to find out more about the iconic 1846 structure and its history at two Talk & Walk sessions next Thursday, May 22.

The sessions will start at the nearby myplace  youth hub and include a talk from the Group Ginger team who will outline their vision for bringing the Grade II Listed building back to life

Following this there will be a walk and talk around the OTH detailing the heritage of the building and future engagement opportunities.

The tours are part of this year’s Middlesbrough Local History Month, an annual showcase of the people, places and events that contribute to the town’s unique character.

This year’s theme – Uncovering Middlesbrough’s Past To Shape Our Future – explores how the town’s remarkable social and industrial history have paved the way for the bold and ambitious Middlesbrough of the 21st century.

Local History Month Director Robert Nichols said: “Middlesbrough’s Old Town Hall has been immortalised by LA Lowry, and is a building of not just local importance, but of regional and national significance.

“The news that it is to be restored and brought back into use is a fantastic development, and these Talk & Walk tours are a great chance to learn about its incredible history, and to gain a glimpse of what the future may hold.

“That’s what Local History Month is all about, and I hope as many people as possible come along to this and other events.”

  • Talk & Walk sessions at the Old Town Hall take place on Thursday, May 22 from 10.30am to 11.30am and from 1pm to 2pm.

Tickets are free, but places must be booked:
