Today, the United Kingdom joins the global observance of National Rescue Dog Day, a day dedicated to raising awareness about the countless dogs in shelters awaiting loving homes. Established in 2018 by Lisa Wiehebrink, founder of Tails That Teach, the day emphasizes the importance of adopting rescue dogs and giving them a second chance at life .
Royal Recognition
Queen Camilla has brought national attention to the cause by introducing her new rescue puppy, Moley. Adopted from Battersea Dogs & Cats Home earlier this year, Moley is a mixed-breed pup described as "mischievous" by the Queen. In a recently released photograph, Queen Camilla is seen holding Moley, highlighting her ongoing support for animal welfare. The Queen's other dogs, Bluebell and the late Beth, also adopted from Battersea, have been cherished companions .
Moley's name, along with those of Bluebell, Beth, and King Charles's dog Snuff, is inscribed in the RHS and BBC Radio 2 Dog Garden at the Chelsea Flower Show. Designed by Monty Don, the garden features dog-friendly elements and will be relocated to Battersea Dogs & Cats Home after the show, where Queen Camilla serves as patron .
Community Celebrations
Across the UK, communities are celebrating National Rescue Dog Day by sharing stories of adopted dogs and encouraging others to consider adoption.

Debunking Myths
Dogs Trust is using the occasion to challenge common misconceptions about rescue dogs. Their campaign emphasizes that dogs of all ages and backgrounds can make wonderful companions, and that many behavioral issues can be addressed with proper training and care .
How to Get Involved
National Rescue Dog Day encourages individuals to:
- Adopt: Consider giving a rescue dog a forever home.
- Foster: Provide temporary care for dogs in need.
