Police were informed that two men entered The Jeweller’s Guild, on Park View in Whitley Bay, at 3.45pm on Friday, April 25.
The men asked to buy a Rolex watch valued at £9,000 and tried to use two bank cards to pay for it which were declined.
It was reported that one of the men then used another card and asked to use a handheld card reader.
He then altered the settings on the card payment machine to display that the transaction had been approved.
The men then left the shop with the watch and staff found that the transaction had not been completed.
Enquiries into the report are ongoing and today (Monday), officers have issued an image of a man they wish to trace.
He was in the area at the time and officers believe he may be able to assist with their enquiries.
The man, or anyone who knows who he is, should send Northumbria Police a direct message on social media, use the live chat function on the Force website or go to https://www.northumbria.police.uk/tua/tell-us-about/cor/tell-us-about-existing-case-report/
