Middlesbrough Sports Village marks milestone anniversary

Written by Aaron Kearney on 17 May 2025

One of Middlesbrough’s best loved leisure venues marks its tenth birthday this week.

Middlesbrough Sports Village was officially launched in May, 2015 and has developed a reputation as one of the best facilities of its kind in the region.

The iconic Marton Road complex replaced the decades-old Clairville Stadium with a state-of-the-art sport hall and gym, 400m outdoor running track and velodrome.

And it has gone from strength to strength over its first ten years playing host to flagship events including the Northern Athletics Championships and North East Counties Athletics Championships.

Its track and facilities have been graced by a who’s who of elite level athletes including Richard Kilty, Rabah Yousif and Chris Tomlinson, and it’s a key venue for award-winning operator Everyone Active’s Champions schemes which nurture the next generation of track and field talent and support non-profit community initiatives.

Indoor facilities cater for a huge range of sports and activities from judo to powerchair football, while outdoor courts are popular for five-a-side and junior football.

And the Sports Village has even established itself as a new venue for Middlesbrough’s Council, Mayoral and Parliamentary elections.

Coinciding with this week’s birth celebrations, this Thursday (May 15) also sees the Sports Village play host to the prestigious Street Soccer Northern Region Cup.

The inclusive tournament features trials for Street Soccer Team England taking place outside London for the first time, with those selected going on to play with Team England at the 2025 Homeless World Cup in Oslo.

Middlesbrough Mandale Athletics Club committee member Scott Hydon said: “We are proud to call Middlesbrough Sports Village our home.

“The Sports Village is the region’s leading athletics facility and has enabled us to provide opportunities for primary school children through to Olympic athletes to enjoy athletics and be the best athlete they can be.

“We look forward to working with Middlesbrough Council and Everyone Active to continue to ensure that aspiring athletes across the Tees Valley have the best opportunity enjoy athletics at Middlesbrough Sports Village.”

Councillor Jan Ryles, Middlesbrough Council’s Executive member for Adult Social Care & Public Health, said: “We know how much people value great quality, affordable sport and leisure facilities, and when Clairville reached the end of its life it was essential that we replace it with a complex fit for the coming decades.

“That’s exactly what was delivered with the Middlesbrough Sports Village, and ten years after its launch it continues to grow and prosper.

“The testimonials from the many groups that use the complex are a testament to the fulfilling of that potential, and to the strength of our enduring partnership with Everyone Active.

“Here’s to the next ten years and beyond.”

Paul Ayre, Everyone Active’s area contract manager, said: “We are immensely proud to operate this amazing centre, providing state-of-the-art facilities and activities for the local community.

“We offer something for everyone, regardless of age, interests or ability, giving all people in Middlesbrough and beyond the chance to improve their health and wellbeing.

“Our fantastic partnership with Middlesbrough Council continues to strengthen and we look forward to serving the local community for years to come.”
