The outstanding achievements of some of County Durham’s young people and sporting stars have been recognised.
The Chairman’s Medal, which is the highest honour that can be awarded by Durham County Council, has been bestowed on Olympic rower, Lauren Irwin, and Tanfield School’s VEX Robotics Team.
[modula id="5430"]Lauren was first introduced to rowing at the age of 13 and, now 26, has gone on to compete in national and international competitions.
Last year, she became the first person from Peterlee to ever win an Olympic Medal after securing bronze in the Women’s Eight at the Paris Olympics.
As a member of Chester-le-Street Rowing Club, Lauren is a role model for the younger athletes, encouraging others to do their best and sharing her passion for the sport.
Lauren’s Chairman’s Medal recognises her outstanding achievements in rowing, while students from Tanfield School’s VEX Robotics Team have been awarded for their outstanding services to Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) in the community.
The team’s medal follows its recent success in Dallas, Texas, where students took part in the VEX VRC finals.
It’s the first time in history that a team from the north east has qualified for the global finals of the competition, setting a new benchmark for excellence in STEM and inspiring other students across the county.
The team has also brought together its love of VEX Robotics with its roles in the RAF Cadets, creating new opportunities for cadets to engage in the innovative robotics programme, which fosters STEM skills and encourages teamwork and leadership.
The awards were presented by Joan Nicholson, the outgoing Chair of Durham County Council.
