A suspect has been arrested after a string of burglaries in the Birtley area of Gateshead.

Shortly after 3am yesterday (Thursday), officers were alerted to several reports of offenders attempting to break into properties on Coniston, Garsdale, Mingarry and Tantallion.

Officers were swiftly deployed where some of the occupants had spotted two males, who fled the scene before police arrival.

In most cases, it was understood they tried to force entry to the homes and had caused damage.

In some cases, they had gained access to the inside of the address – with items including a vacuum and a quantity of cash reported as stolen.

An investigation into the crime spree was immediately launched by the Force’s dedicated burglary team.

Today (Friday), a 26-year-old man was arrested in connection with the reports on suspicion of attempted burglary.

He remains in police custody at this time.

Detective Inspector Gillian Glenwright, of Northumbria Police, said: “We’re pleased to have been able to arrest a suspect following a string of reports in the Birtley area on Thursday morning.

“This is not something we take lightly, and we completely recognise the impact that burglary and theft can have not only on the victims themselves, but on the wider community as a whole.

“That’s why we have dedicated teams in place tasked with pursuing perpetrators and bringing them to justice.”

Det Insp Glenwright added: “We will continue to do all we can, working in partnership with our residents and businesses, to stop thieves in their tracks and ensure they rightly have their day in court.

“As ever, we’d ask the public and businesses to work with us – ensuring their property and vehicles are secured and valuables are out of sight.”

Officers are keen to speak to any further witnesses about the incidents, particularly those with CCTV or doorbell footage.

Anyone with information can get in touch by sending Northumbria Police a direct message on social media, or by using live chat and report forms on the Force’s website.

Those unable to make contact in these ways can call 101. In an emergency, or if a crime is taking place, always dial 999.
