Two alleyway dumpers who fly-tipped in central Middlesbrough have been hit with court fines.

Furniture was dumped in separate cases at Portman Street and Wicklow Street, investigations by Middlesbrough Council’s Environmental Neighbourhood Safety Team found.

After a report that mattresses and other furniture had been left in an alleyway at Portman Street on March 25 this year, staff investigated CCTV and visited a property.

A man who lives at the address, Iosif Sandulache, admitted to dumping the waste.

A similar report of white goods and household furniture being dumped at alley gates on Wicklow Street was made on August 13.

The occupant, Lucie Fekova, told council officers that friends had removed items from the property but wouldn’t give any further information.

Middlesbrough Council had to remove the waste from both alleyways which cost the taxpayer hundreds of pounds.

Sandulache and Fekova were both issued with an £800 Fixed Penalty Notice.

As neither were paid within 14 days, both cases were sent to Teesside Magistrates’ Court where they were heard this month.

Sandaluche, 29, did not attend court and was fined £660 with £662 in court costs and charges after fly-tipping was proven in his absence.

Fekova, 36, admitted to failing to ensure her waste was disposed of by an approved person. She was fined £332 and a £132.80 court charge.

Councillor Janet Thompson, Middlesbrough Council’s Executive member for Neighbourhoods, said: “Fly-tipping is completely unacceptable, we always investigate and people who are caught will always be brought to justice.

“I want to pay tribute to our officers who work hard to secure these results, and it’s pleasing to see the courts back us up and take action.

“The message is plain and simple – dispose of your waste legally and responsibly or face a hefty fine and a possible criminal record.”
