On Boxing Day morning, hundreds of brave souls gathered at Redcar’s seafront for the annual Boxing Dip, plunging into the icy North Sea to raise funds for North East charities.

The event, a cherished tradition in the area, sees participants of all ages donning festive costumes, from Santa suits to reindeer antlers, to take on the freezing challenge. Despite the biting cold, spirits were high as crowds of spectators cheered on the dippers from the shore.

Organized by local volunteers, the Redcar Boxing Dip has become a staple of the festive season, raising thousands of pounds each year for causes close to the hearts of the community. This year, proceeds will support a range of North East charities, including those providing vital services for families in need, mental health support, and care for the elderly.

Speaking at the event, Mary Henderson said:
“This is what Redcar is all about—coming together as a community to make a difference. The energy and generosity of everyone here today is incredible, and we’re so proud to be supporting such important causes.”

Among the participants was David Carter, who has taken part in the dip for the past five years. “It’s freezing, but it’s worth it!” he said, shivering but smiling. “This event brings everyone together, and it’s a great way to burn off the Christmas dinner while raising money for charity.”

The event also saw a strong turnout from local businesses and organizations, many of whom donated generously or participated in the dip themselves.

As the day wrapped up, organizers expressed their gratitude to the dippers, spectators, and supporters who helped make the event another resounding success. They hope to surpass last year’s fundraising total, ensuring that the Boxing Dip continues to be a force for good in the North East.
