In a shocking incident on Christmas Day morning, ambulance workers were subjected to violence while attempting to provide care to someone in need.
A North East Ambulance Service (NEAS) first responder was returning to her station in a rapid response vehicle when she noticed a person sitting alone in the middle of the Moor Farm roundabout on the A19 in Northumberland. Concerned for their safety, she stopped to offer assistance.
Initially, the individual did not engage with her, but during the interaction, they turned violent and assaulted the responder. Acting swiftly, the responder pressed her panic button, summoning help from a second emergency ambulance crew who happened to be passing nearby.
When the additional crew arrived, a second crew member was also physically assaulted. It took three ambulance staff members to restrain the individual until the police arrived.
“Unacceptable and Inconceivable”
Claire Jobling, Operations Manager at NEAS, expressed her dismay at the attack:
“We are shocked and disappointed that members of our team, who dedicate themselves to helping others, were harmed on Christmas Day. Our staff give up their own celebrations with loved ones to serve their communities, and it is inconceivable that they face violence in the line of duty.”
The first responder, who wishes to remain anonymous, has served NEAS for two decades and previously experienced an assault earlier in her career. Reflecting on this latest incident, she shared:
“I have two small children at home who were waiting for me to return to celebrate Christmas. Since the attack, I’ve struggled with basic tasks like brushing my hair, cutting up my dinner, and, most heartbreakingly, giving my kids cuddles. That’s just the physical impact I’m recovering from.
“Had there not been anyone nearby to help, this could have ended very differently. It’s unacceptable—we were only trying to help.”
The responder sustained injuries to her arm and ribs but remains determined to continue her vital work.
Police Investigation Underway
Northumbria Police arrested a man in connection with the incident on suspicion of assault. He has since been released on police bail pending further inquiries.
A Sobering Reminder
The attack came just hours before King Charles, in his Christmas address, expressed gratitude to those who selflessly care for others, often at personal cost. The incident highlights the risks faced by frontline healthcare workers, even during the holiday season, as they strive to serve their communities.
NEAS has reiterated its commitment to supporting its staff and ensuring their safety while delivering essential care to the public.
